The focus of his collaboration with the lab is the characterization of global brain states using novel analytic methods. The central idea is that the behavior of the brain, as a highly interconnected and non-linear structure, cannot be understood in terms of isolated areas performing independent calculations. On the contrary, different partial computations receive constant input from a large number of distinct sources, and influence each other on an ongoing basis. To this effect, we are developing techniques based on extended non-linear networks of interacting elements in order to characterize the performing as well as the dysfunctional brain.
